5G Speed and coverage aren’t just patchy, it’s worldwide

5G is here, but even if you live in one of the few towns in the globe that have been turned on by the next generation of mobile networks, you’ll probably find coverage (and speeds) far from amazing right now.

The excellent news is that you are not alone. We have already tested the new 5 G networks in the United States and the United Kingdom, where speed and connectivity vary wildly, and we have now taken our 5 G road journey to South Korea.

With a Samsung Galaxy S10 5G in hand, we spent three days testing the coverage and speeds in the South Korean capital, Seoul, with the findings being… Just as easy to predict.

South Korea 5G

Seoul is considered one of the most technologically advanced cities on the planet, but during the initial few months of the fifth generation mobile network, its 5G networks do not seem to be faring any better than those in the US and UK.

5G Phones: All Next-Gen Network Compatible Handsets All you need to know about 5G Hands-on: Samsung Galaxy S10 5 G review.

First South Korea 5G experience

South Korea 5G: We receive our 5G handset from Samsung Galaxy S10 and quickly unbox the phone, login and set up. When the signal is checked, it says it has a full 5G signal. Time for speed testing.

Our handset was mounted with a Korean Telecom (KT) SIM, and it’s the only network we’ve had access to in South Korea during our moment.

We discovered speeds to be enormously variable when firing up Fast.com, bottoming out at about 40Mbps and peaking (at least for us) at about 360Mbps.

Now we were sitting in a room of about 50 reporters, Best South Korea 5G, all of whom had the same phone and the same testing-so our handset would have been fighting for bandwidth.

The 360Mbps score, however, is at least promising, but when we returned to our hotel, the Galaxy S10 5G read only LTE in the signal bar. Time to charge and get prepared for more morning testing.

Improvements, in Our Default

Welcome to Day 2, if you’ve done so far… Well, there’s no praise because you just didn’t go far. Just continue to read, yeah?

With a solid day ahead of us and lots of movement between Seoul’s center and the outer suburbs, it’s a perfect opportunity to test the length and breadth of KT’s 5 G coverage as we bounce on a bus.

There was no 5 G signal in our hotel, but we got full 5 G bars walking outside and a few velocity trials later showed that there were elevated speeds accessible.

We managed to clock a 830Mbps mammoth that far exceeds your 4 G speeds. However, as we started moving through the city center, the 5 G signal jumped numerous times to 4 G and back, and as we hit the outskirts, we seemed to have left behind us the next generation network.

Like the U.K. and U.S. roll-out, Seoul has 5 G in its middle, but it’s just yet to reach out further.

Downloads in a flash

Another day and a few more speed tests see us grab up to 700Mbps of 5 G speeds.

What does this imply for your use? Well, both WhatsApp and Instagram (both less than 40 MB) have been downloaded instantly-and in these early 5 G days, quick downloads and buffer-free streaming are the obvious use cases for the technology.

It’s not like we’ve been waiting for apps to download on 4 G for ages, but these high velocities are just the tip of the capabilities of 5G.

Over the next few years, as the networks roll out to more people and developers begin to investigate what’s feasible with a quicker, more reliable and nearly latency-free network, we’ll see the network’s true power.

For now, though, unless you’re living in a major global city’s 5 G coverage zone, it’s still worth waiting for 5 G networks to roll out further, and for prices to drop, and more handsets to be available, before moving to5G.

We’d say you’re going to leave it for at least a year, but if you can hold on for 18-24 months, you might be in an even better 5 G situation.
